STILLWATER, Okla. – The No. 17 University of Pittsburgh wrestling team (6-4), dropped a 26-14, contest to No. 2 Oklahoma State (10-0) this afternoon at Gallagher-Iba arena.
After Oklahoma State got out to a 6-0 lead with a pin at 125 pounds, Pitt got on the board when Shelton Mack earned a 13-6 decision over Tyler Dorrell at 133 pounds. The junior got off to a quick start in his match securing three first period takedowns to take a 6-3 advantage into the second. Mack entered the third leading 8-5 and started down. After a quick escape, Mack went on the offensive lifting and planting Dorrell for a two point takedown and two near fall points. Dorrell was able to escape and Mack couldn’t finish a move on the edge as time expired for a major and settled for the 13-6 win to get the Panthers on the board.
Building off the momentum from Mack, Travis Shaffer came out of the gate aggressive at 141 pounds. Shaffer scored a quick takedown of OSU’s Julian Feikert and continued to work him to his back. The Pitt bench thought that Shaffer had a fall secured on multiple occasions but the referee did not award one and Shaffer walked out with a dominant 15-0 technical fall at 2:32 to give the Panthers an 8-6 lead.
The lead was short-lived as the Cowboys were able to run off victories in the next five matches to regain the lead.
At 197-pounds, Matt Wilps provided the most dramatic win on the evening for the Panthers when he pinned No. 16 Blake Rosholt in overtime. The two grapplers went back and forth in regulation with each earning an escape in a very physical bout. After a scoreless sudden victory period, Wilps began on top and rode Rosholt out. Starting on bottom, Wilps was able to roll though on a scramble and hook Rosholt’s leg to earn a pin at the 8:39 mark of the contest to secure six points.
OSU closed the match with a victory by decision at heavyweight to secure the 26-14 win.
Pitt will return to the mats on Saturday, Jan. 26, when they travel to Lock Haven for an EWL matchup.
