PITTSBURGH - The No. 14 University of Pittsburgh wrestling team dropped a 22-14 contest to Lehigh (8-7) on senior night this evening at Fitzgerald Field House.
After the Panthers (8-6) were forced to forfeit the 125-pound bout for a second consecutive match, Shelton Mack got the Panthers on the board with a decision over Randy Cruz at 133 pounds. Mack started the match aggressively scoring a pair of first period takedowns and taking a 5-3 lead into the second where he earned an escape to take a 6-3 lead into the final period. An additional pair of takedowns were accompanied by a bonus point for riding time as Mack was able to walk away with an 11-6 decision.
The Mountain Hawks retook the momentum by taking a major at 141 pounds and decisions at 149 and 157 to send the match into break with Lehigh leading 16-3.
Tyler Wilps came out strong for Pitt following the break earning a 21-6 technical fall over Ben Haas at 165 pounds. Wilps used eight takedowns, including a nice double near the end of regulation, two nearfall points, an escape, a point for stalling and the bonus point for riding time to earn the tech fall at the 7:00 mark to cut the Lehigh lead to 16-8.
Unfortunately, the Panthers could not capitalize on the momentum from the Wilps win and dropped a pair of narrow decisions to top-15 wresters at 174 and 184 pounds.
At 197, Wilps scored a 7-2 decision over Josh Bolich, while Thomusseit took a 3-2 victory over Max Wessell to close his career at Fitzgerald Field House with a win.
The Panthers will return to the mats next Friday, Feb. 22, when they close out their dual season with a 7 p.m. contest at EWL rival Edinboro.
