Blacksburg, Va. - The No. 10 University of Pittsburgh wrestling team finished in second place at the 60th Annual ACC Wrestling Championship on Saturday at the Cassell Coliseum.
Pitt came up short of adding the tournament title to its ACC Dual Meet Championship after scoring 67 team points, 20 points behind hosts and now back-to-back champion Virginia Tech.
"Our hats go off to Virginia Tech. They deserved to win after the way they wrestled today," Pitt head coach Jason Peters said. "It's disappointing, especially when so many close matches go against you. But you can't always win in wrestling, and our guys know that. Now we have a week and a half to get better and prepare to perform well at nationals in Oklahoma City."
Pitt crowned one individual champion - 174-pounder Tyler Wilps, who defeated Virginia's Stephen Doty in the final by a 7-2 decision - and six Panthers stood on the podium (top three). Anthony Zanetta (125), Edgar Bright (141), Mikey Racciato (149) and Max Thomusseit (184) all finished in second place after each lost heartbreaking finals.
Those five Panthers and P.J. Tasser, who finished fourth at heavyweight, earned automatic qualifying bids to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Tournament. Even though Shelton Mack (133) reached the podium by winning his consolation bracket after beating North Carolina's Troy Heilmann 10-4 in the third-place match, he didn't receive an automatic bid.
The complete Pitt results from today's action are listed below, and the final standings and brackets are available here.
Pitt and its national qualifiers will be back in action at the NCAA Division I Wresting Tournament in Oklahoma City, beginning on Thursday, March 20.
