ST. LOUIS – Redshirt freshman Taleb Rahmani defeated ACC-foe Andrew Atkinson of Virginia in the first round of consolations to survive and advance to another day of competition at the 2017 NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.
The three Panthers competing in the round of 16 all dropped their matches, but will wrestle in the consolation rounds Friday morning looking to reach their eventual goal of All-America status.
Session 3 of the Championships is set to get underway at 11 a.m. ET and will feature quarterfinals and wrestlebacks. The Friday night session of semifinals and wrestlebacks starts at 8 p.m. ET.
SESSION 2 RECAP
Round of 16 - 133 pounds - Bryan Lantry (BUF) dec. Dom Forys (UP), 5-3
Forys fell behind late in the opening frame as Lantry took him down with under one minute to go. Starting on bottom, Forys quickly escaped to cut Lantry’s lead to 2-1. Forys then took a 3-2 lead late in the second off a takedown. Lantry started the third on bottom and escaped to tie it 3-3 with one minute to go. He then secured the win with a takedown with under 10 seconds on the clock.
Lantry handed Forys just his second loss of the season and snapped his 13-match win streak that began Jan. 14.
UP NEXT: Forys will face first-time opponent Austin Eicher of Michigan State.
Round of 16 - 165 pounds – Anthony Valencia (ASU) dec. TeShan Campbell (UP), 9-2
Campbell and Valencia got off to a slow start in the first period as Valencia took down Campbell about two minutes into the first. Campbell quickly escaped and trailed 2-1 entering the second where he would start on bottom. The sophomore tied it 2-2 after an escape, however neither wrestler would score any more points in the second. Campbell started the third on top and Valencia escaped to take a 3-2 lead. He extended his lead late in the third to what would be the final after a takedown and four nearfall points, 9-2.
The loss is Campbell’s third on the year and snapped his 14-match win streak.
UP NEXT: Campbell is set to face North Dakota State’s Andrew Fogarty for the first time.
Round of 16 – 285 pounds – Connor Medbery (WISC) dec. Ryan Solomon (UP), 5-0
Solomon suffered his first loss of the NCAA Championships to the No. 2 seed from Wisconsin, Connor Medbery, 5-0. After a scoreless first period, Medbery escaped in the first and wouldn’t score again until the third. The Badger picked up two nearfall points and added on a penalty point and riding time en route to the decision.
UP NEXT: Solomon will take on Newton Smerchek of Central Michigan Friday morning.
Cons. First Round – 157 pounds – Taleb Rahmani (UP) maj. dec. Andrew Atkinson (UVA), 18-7
Rahmani was able to avenge a regular season loss in thrilling fashion as he downed Virginia’s Andrew Atkinson in an 18-7 major decision in the first round of consolations. The redshirt sophomore built up a 6-4 lead at the conclusion of the opening frame. Rahmani jumped to the eventual final score, 18-7, in the second period and never looked back.
UP NEXT: Rahmani will face Josh Shields of Arizona State in the second round of consolations. The two last met at the 2016 Midlands Championships, which resulted in Shields picking up a 12-3 major decision over Rahmani.
