Pitt Finishes 22nd at 2014 NCAA Wrestling Championships

March 22, 2014

OKLAHOMA CITY - After becoming the 75th All-American in Pitt Wrestling history last night, a bruised and battered Tyler Wilps made sure he wasn't beaten in his final match on Saturday afternoon at the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Wilps fell behind in his Seventh Place Match against Bryce Hammond from California-Bakersfield, but the Pitt 174-pound junior rallied for a 4-2 victory to end his tournament in winning fashion.

That victory brought Pitt's team-point total to 20.0 points. The Panthers finished the tournament in 22nd place. The result marked the third consecutive season that Pitt Wrestling concluded the NCAA Championships ranked in the Top 25.

Although Pitt wasn't able to take advantage of the tournament-style scoring system that rewards individual performances over team depth, the Panthers can take pride knowing that they beat five teams in the dual meet regular season that finished level or above them in the final NCAA standings: Oklahoma State (3rd), Virginia Tech (8th), Lehigh (18th), North Carolina (19th) and Maryland (20th).

Complete results from the eight wrestlers Pitt sent to the 2014 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships are listed below.
