Columbus, Ohio – The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team won four of the final five matches but it wasn’t enough to overcome an early deficit as the No. 18 Panthers (0-2) fell to the fifth-ranked Buckeyes (3-0), 26-13, this afternoon at St. John Arena.
Ohio State jumped out to a lead after taking the first five matches of the day before Tyler Wilps got the Panthers on the board with a 5-1 decision over Mark Martin at 165-pounds. After a scoreless first, Wilps took the lead with takedown on a low single. Wilps was able to add to his advantage in the third with a quick escape and takedown to secure the 5-1 victory and the first points of the dual for Pitt.
Following a narrow 4-3 loss by Nick Bonaccorsi against second-ranked Nick Heflin at 174 pounds, the Panthers won the next three matches to close out the dual on a high note.
At 184 pounds, Max Thomusseit earned a pair of escapes in the second and third period and a bonus point from 1:18 of riding time to secure a 3-2 victory over Kenny Curtis.
Matt Wilps followed the Thomusseit victory with a 13-3 major decision victory over C.J. Magrum at 197-pounds. Wilps used five takedowns, an escape, a point for stalling and 3:34 of riding time to earn the Panthers’ first bonus point win of the dual season.
Zac Thomusseit closed out the match for Pitt with a 5-1 decision over No. 19 Peter Capone. After a scoreless first, Thomusseit started down in the second and scored a quick escape. The senior then went on the offensive and tallied a takedown to take a 3-0 lead into the final period. In the third, Thomusseit was able to score another takedown after a Capone escape to clinch the 5-1 victory.
The Panthers return to the mats on Friday, Nov. 30, when they open their home dual season against No. 12 Virginia Tech at Fitzgerald Field House.
