PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team looks to add four wins to its record when it hosts the Pitt Duals on Saturday at the Fitzgerald Field House. Columbia, Davidson, Eastern Michigan, Princeton and VMI will join the Panthers in the six-team event.
No. 10 Pitt opens competition against Columbia at 9 a.m. The Lions are led by former Pitt All-American Carl Fronhofer, who will be making his first trip back to Fitzgerald Field House as a head coach. Fronhofer is one of 20 wrestlers that Pitt head coach Rande Stottlemyer has guided to a combined 29 All-American honors.
Following the match with Columbia, the Panthers will take on Eastern Michigan, Princeton and VMI. Both Columbia and VMI competed at the Mat Town Invitational at Lock Haven, where Pitt wrestled to a second-place finish.
Current Pitt assistant coach Jason Peters was an assistant at Princeton from 1998-01. This will be the first dual meet against the Tigers since Peters joined the Panthers.
Pitt enters the match with a 4-1 record with two wins over teams ranked in the top-10 at the time of the match. The Panthers' lone loss was to No. 6 Ohio State.
Twenty nationally ranked wrestlers are on the rosters of the six teams competing Saturday with Pitt leading the way with seven. Columbia has six wrestlers ranked by WrestlingReport.com, while Eastern Michigan and Princeton have four and three, respectively.
The Panthers are a perfect 11-0 against the four teams they will be competing against (5-0 vs. Eastern Michigan, 3-0 vs. Princeton, 2-0 vs. VMI and 1-0 vs. Columbia).
