PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh redshirt junior Tyler Wilps has been named ACC Wrestler of the Week, the conference announced this morning.
With Pitt leading 12-9 and momentum with Virginia after winning the bouts at 157 and 165 pounds, No. 7 Tyler Wilps put in a dominating performance in a 12-4 major decision over No. 12 Stephen Doty.
The redshirt junior scored five takedowns in the victory including a solid go-behind with less than 20 seconds remaining to push the lead to eight points and secure the major decision.
The match swung momentum back towards the Panthers, who went on to a 25-9 victory and remained perfect in ACC dual matches. With the win, Wilps improved to 21-5, 9-2 in dual matches, and 13-0 in bonus point matches.
Wilps becomes the second-straight Panther to be recognized as ACC Wrestler of the Week, joining senior heavyweight P.J. Tasser who was honored last week.
Seventh-ranked Pitt returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 1, when it travels to long-time rival West Virginia (9-3, 0-2 Big 12) in a 7 p.m. contest at the WVU Coliseum.
