PITTSBURGH – The 15th-ranked Pitt wrestling team (8-4) will welcome in-state rival No. 3 Penn State (9-1) to Fitzgerald Field House for a 7 p.m. dual on Friday, Feb. 8. The match, which is sold-out, will air live on Pitt Panthers TV (Comcast 188 and 210). The match will also air tape delayed on TCN Mid-Atlantic on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The Panthers are coming off a 31-9 victory over West Virginia in which six wrestlers – Shelton Mack, Ronnie Garbinsky, Donnie Tasser, Max Thomusseit, Matt Wilps and Zac Thomusseit – earned bonus point victories.
Penn State is coming off a weekend split against a pair of top-10 opponents in Iowa and Illinois. Following a close 22-16 loss at Iowa on Friday night, the Nittany Lions shut out Illinois, 37-0, on Sunday. PSU’s roster features seven wrestlers ranked in the latest Amateur Wrestling News Poll, five of whom are ranked in the top-5 of their respective weight classes.
Pitt, whose roster features five wrestlers ranked by AWN, has a 12-52-3 all-time record against Penn State, including a 33-6 setback last season at Rec Hall.
Due to the sell-out, gates at Fitzgerald Field House will be opening at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to get the best seats for the matchup between in-state foes.
