Updated Brackets

Des  Moines, Iowa – Matt Wilps advanced to the semifinals and clinched All-America honors for the second-consecutive season to lead Pitt in Session III of the NCAA Championships.

Additionally, two members of the Panthers’ wrestling team, Max and Zac Thomusseit, are still competing in the consolation bracket, after the third session. Pitt will return to the mats at 7:00 p.m. ET this evening for Session IV at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.

Wilps advanced to the semis and clinched All-America honors for the second time with an impressive 7-1 decision over Blake Rosholt of Oklahoma State. Wilps started the match strong scoring a takedown less than a minute in to take an early 2-0 lead. Rosholt earned an escape to cut the score to 2-1 going into the second. In the second, Wilps began down and escaped a mere two seconds into the period to take a 3-1 lead heading to the final period. In the third, Wilps kept Rosholt down and was able to add three back points and a bonus point for over two minutes of riding time to take the 7-1 win. With the victory, Wilps became the 18th wrestler in Pitt history to garner multiple All-America honors. Wilps will wrestle for a spot in the finals later tonight.

Max and Zac Thomusseit both dropped hard fought matches to top seeds in the quarterfinals to drop to the consolation brackets. Max fell to Ed Ruth of Penn State, while Zac dropped a tiebreaker to Dom Bradley of Missouri. The Thomusseit brothers will wrestle tonight for the first All-America honors of their respective careers in the Round of 12.
