GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Three members of the Pitt wrestling team have been named to the All-ACC Academic Wrestling Team, the Atlantic Coast Conference and Commissioner John Swofford announced on Thursday morning.
Geno Morelli, Max Thomusseit and Tyler Wilps were the three Panthers to receive the prestigious recognition. Candidates for the All-ACC Academic Wrestling Team must be student-athletes that maintained a minimum 3.0 grade-point average in the most recent semester and also hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better in their academic career.
Only Duke and North Carolina, with five each, had more All-ACC Academic Wrestling Team selections than Pitt.
Geno Morelli is a Finance major from DuBois, Pa. The redshirt freshman 165-pounder took fourth place at the ACC Championships in March and finished with 14 wins during the season.
Max Thomusseit is a Communication major from St. Paris, Ohio. The junior 184-pounder qualified for the NCAA Championships for the third time in his career this past season, earning a No. 4 seed. He finished with a 21-4 record and claimed second place at the ACC Championships.
Tyler Wilps is a Finance major with a Chemistry minor from Oakdale, Pa.; currently, he plans on attending medical school after his wrestling career. The junior 174-pounder became the 75th All-American in Pitt Wrestling history when he claimed seventh place in his weight class at the NCAA Championships. He was also the first individual wrestling ACC Champion in school history and finished with a team-high 32 wins last season.
