“It’s exciting to have Matt Wilps join our coaching staff,” Peters said. “Matt will add to what we’ve been doing here at Pitt. He’s a local guy and I know he’ll help with our upperweights’ development. I think that he’s looking forward to the new challenge in this role.”
WIlps joins the coaching staff after a highly successful wrestling career with the Panthers. Wilps was an All-American at 197-pounds in 2012 and 2013, a three-time individual Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Champion, and finished his impressive career with 129 wins, good for fifth on Pitt’s all-time list. Additionally, Wilps was a member of Pitt’s six EWL Championship teams over the past four seasons.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to continue to contribute to a winning program here at Pitt,” Wilps said.
The winner of the 2013 Panther Award, given to the graduating senior athlete who has promoted Pitt Athletics through his outstanding athletic achievements, Wilps graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Economics and Psychology.
