PSU Open Bracket
PITTSBURGH - Anthony Zanetta captured his fourth open title of the season while Geno Morelli and P.J. Tasser also placed to pace the University of Pittsburgh squad at the Penn State Open.
Zanetta started his run to the 125-pound crown in dominant fashion with a 17-0 tech fall, a 15-2 major and an 8-1 decision to reach the semis. In the semis, Zanetta matched up with Brian Bokoski of North Carolina and was able to get the Tar Heel on his back for a fall at 2:43 to set up a match with second-ranked Nico Megaludis of Penn State in the finals. Zanetta was able to control the pace in the finals and earned a 3-2 victory by decision. Zanetta, who stays undefeated on the season, has outscored his opponents by an impressive 168-34 margin with a fall.
Morelli earned his first spot on a podium with an eighth place finish at 165-pounds. After starting his tournament with a 4-0 decision, Morelli dropped a hard fought 7-5 decision against 10th-ranked Mark Lewandowski of Buffalo to send him to the consolation bracket. In the consols, Morelli ran off four consecutive wins before dropping his final two matches to finish his tournament with a 5-3 mark.
Tasser won his first two matches before dropping a narrow 3-1 decision in overtime to Turtogtokh Luvsandorj of the Citadel sending him into the wrestlebacks. Tasser earned a 7-5 decision and a 15-6 major to reach the finals of the consolation bracket where he fell to Mike Dessino of Bloomsburg to finish in sixth place at 174-pounds.
The Panthers return to the mats on Friday, Dec. 7, when they host No. 16 Maryland at Fitzgerald Field House.
