PITTSBURGH – Coming off runner-up finishes at the 50th Midlands Championships, University of Pittsburgh seniors Matt Wilps and Zac Thomusseit have been named EWL Wrestlers of the Week, the Conference announced Monday.
Wilps takes home his second EWL honor of the season after finishing second in the 197 pound bracket at Midlands. Wilps mowed through Princeton’s Dan Santoro and Mike Tamillow of the Tamillow Twisters by major decisions to start his tournament. Wilps then downed a pair of ranked wrestlers in Iowa State’s Kyven Gadson and Oregon State’s Taylor Meeks by decisions to advance to the finals. In the finals, Wilps dropped a narrow 4-2 decision to No. 1 Dustin Kilgore for his first setback of the season.
Thomusseit, who also earned EWL honors last week, used two decisions and a major to reach the finals at heavyweight. In the finals, Thomusseit fell to Chad Hanke of Oregon State by a close 3-2 margin for his first loss of the year.
Wilps, Thomusseit and the rest of the Panthers will return to the mats on Sunday, Jan. 13, when they welcome Bloomsburg, Eastern Michigan and Davidson to Fitzgerald Field House for the Pitt Duals beginning at 10 a.m
