PITTSBURGH - Freshman Sheila Stufflet led all scorers with a career-high 15 points to lead the Pittsburgh women's basketball team over Big East Conference foe Providence, 68-53, tonight at Fitzgerald Field House.

Stufflet (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson Senior), who started just the second game of her career, was one of three Panthers in double-figures. She shot 4-of-9 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line while also contributing four rebounds and an assist. Sophomore Mandy Wittenmyer (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) was one rebound shy of a double-double as she grabbed nine boards and dropped in 12 points. She added three steals, two assists and a block to her performance. Additionally, sophomore Brooke Stewart (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) scored 10 points and had three rebounds.

Pittsburgh came out shooting to open the game with a 16-3 run inside the first five minutes of the first half before extending its lead to 17 points at the 7:02 mark (30-13). The Panthers held as much as a 19-point advantage, 39-20, with 1:37 remaining in the half and entered the locker room 15 points ahead of the Friars with a score of 41-26.

It was much of the same for Pittsburgh in the second half as the Panthers never relinquished their double-figure lead. Providence pulled within 12, 49-37, at the 13:50 mark of the second stanza, but would draw no closer as Pittsburgh rolled to the 68-53 victory.

Other standout performers for the Panthers included sophomore Laine Selwyn (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs), who had a career-high seven rebounds, and junior Jackie Campbell (Munroe Township, Ohio/Stow-Munroe) with a career-high six assists.

The Panthers improve to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in the Big East. The Friars are 6-5 and 0-2 in the conference.
