PITTSBURGH - Quoting Pitt Head Coach Agnus Berenato:
"We played pretty well tonight. I thought Mallorie Winn did a beautiful job handling the point; she's really starting to get her legs and feel for the game back. We struggled a little bit in the first half with fouls, but I thought our bench was great and really picked us up so that we had a chance to hang in there. The Big East is a battle day-in and day-out, and you have to win every game you can regardless of the circumstances. Syracuse is a great team with great players, and they provided us with a tough test tonight."
On Pitt's roster getting healthier:
"I think it's really just a matter of chemistry. It's so nice to have 10 healthy players at practice so that one of the coaches doesn't have to step in. We do what we can, but we're not Division I athletes, and things slow down when we're on the floor. It's great for us to be able to practice with intensity and you see it carry over into games."
On the play of Pitt's freshmen:
"Taneisha Harrison, Chelsea Cole and Shayla Scott are all very talented players who are the future of this program. However, they all have weaknesses that come with inexperience so as good as they are, we have to be careful when they're on the floor. That said, if we play smart, we have the potential to be very good with them in the game. You saw that tonight."
On starting slowly after big win against DePaul:
"DePaul was our best game since I've been here. I thought we started off a little slow in this one for whatever reason. Still, we were able to gain our composure after four or five minutes and really finish out the first half strong. This is a tough league though, and you can't give any minutes away, especially at home. We will be more focused at the start against Cincinnati."
Quoting Pitt's Malorie Winn:
On her play:
"Since coming back I've just been trying to work as hard as I can in practice and do whatever I can to improve my play. Tonight was a good test for me with the pressure I knew I was going to face against Syracuse. I'm anxious to look at the film because even though we won, I know there are things I can do better."
On the turning point in the game for Pitt:
"We really turned it on after halftime. We came out of the lockerroom ready to be more aggressive and turn up the intensity. That was when we really started to pull away."
Quoting Pitt's Shavonte Zellous:
On her play:
"I had the hot hand tonight, but I give my teammates all the credit in the world for getting me the ball in a good position to score. They make me look good, but it's really a team effort."
Quoting Syracuse Head Coach Quentin Hillsman
"I give Pittsburgh a lot of credit tonight. They came out tough and aggressive. We had our chances with Marcedes [Walker] on the bench in foul trouble, but we just couldn't get close enough. Shavonte [Zellous] and Mallorie [Winn] are great players. Mallorie played like she'd never been hurt."
"We played hard in spurts tonight, but it wasn't hard enough. I thought we rebounded offensively very well, but tonight was a tough, physical game. I give all the credit to Pittsburgh. They were the better team tonight."
On part of the game strategy being to get Marcedes Walker in foul trouble:
"Yeah, we didn't want her in the game. It's that simple. She's a dominating force and it was certainly part of our game plan to get her in foul trouble. We wanted to play at her, not around her, and I thought we did a pretty good job of that tonight."
On Shavonte Zellous' play:
"She's [Zellous] an incredible talent. She really is. That's why I voted her First Team Preseason All-Conference. That girl can really play."
On playing a tough schedule thus far:
"The Big East conference is the toughest in the country. Every team didn't lose more than two non-conference games in the beginning of the season. You have to come ready to play every game when you're in the Big East. You have to play hard, tough and physical every night. If not, you're not going to win. Tonight, we just didn't play physical enough."
On breaking their 12-game winning streak:
"I'll take 12-1 in our last 13 games when you're playing in the Big East. I knew that streak was going to end at some point. When you're part of this conference, you're going to have losses. This was a tough game. You try to prepare well and work hard, but you've got to work extra hard in this conference. Pittsburgh did a good job being aggressive tonight, and they just out-played us."
Quoting Junior Guard Chandre Jones:
On the team's second-half play tonight:
"We just came out and tried to play our game. Things just didn't go our way tonight."
