POST-GAME QUOTESHEET

Cincinnati at Pitt, Petersen Events Center, February 20, 2013
Cincinnati 59, Pitt 50

 Quoting Head Coach Berenato
Opening Remarks:

“I feel like our shooting woes have continued. I think that you shoot 34 percent, and we can’t compete with teams. Cincinnati shot 43 [percent]. I thought we had really great spurts, and then we went through a seven-minute period where we didn’t score. They’re daggers. I look at the free throws. We put them on the line. They’re 18-for-26. We were 7-for-12. I’m not really that good with math, but they got 14 more free throws than us. We both scored the same number of baskets, and we scored more threes than they did. It came down to, if you really want statistically, you’re looking at free throws. We did foul out at the very end of the game, and it really helped us because they missed and we were able to come down and score. This was our lowest turnover game in a long time. We had thirteen turnovers, and we really worked on holding onto the ball and trying not to turn the ball over to give the other team opportunities to score. I thought we did a good job there. It was one rebound difference. I thought Bri’s (Brianna Kiesel) stat line is amazing. That’s what you call a stat line. I thought her and Marquel (Davis) did really, really well. I thought Krista (Pettepier) did a really nice job today. Krista’s stats don’t show, but I thought Krista saved, tipped and kept the ball live. It would’ve been Cincinnati’s ball. For a freshman, that’s really exciting to me. I thought she did a really good job defensively.”

On points off of turnovers:
“In the first half, we missed four lay-ups off of turnovers. That’s eight points right there. Now we’re at 15-21. That’s just in the first half. They (Cincinnati) were able to score the ball on the turnover, and we shot the ball on the turnover but didn’t score. We have done a pretty good job of being aggressive and stealing the ball, but we’ve turned it over before we’ve been able to go ahead and try to score. Today we were able to go ahead, and we tried to score, but we didn’t make the score. We were able not to turn it over.”

On the lack of production off of the bench:
“We’re really limited with the players we can play. Abby Dowd can’t play, and she’s a scorer for us. We would’ve had another coming off the bench. Quel’s (Marquel Davis) our spark off the bench. Brittany Gordon was my starter, and she had surgery last Thursday. We have to get more productivity from our bigs. Whether it’s in the starting lineup or off the bench, we have to get some productivity.”
