POST-GAME QUOTESHEET
Lock Haven at Pitt, Petersen Events Center, November 3, 2012

Quoting sophomore guard Brianna Kiesel

On the difference between this year and last year:
“I think we set our teammates up to be successful, where as last year we would get people just following the ball. This year we have a lot of team chemistry and I think that really showed today.”

On her rebounding the ball more this year:

“That’s exactly what the game plan was. We’ve really been working on transition and filling the lanes. Last year I wasn’t big on rebounding, but Coach B (Berenato) and the coaches keep on pushing that the guards need to rebound. I caught a lot of back side rebounds because half the time, the ball was over the rim and I was right there to get it. We really worked on that and I think it came in to the game today.

Quoting sophomore forward Chyna Golden

On what the difference she can see between this year’s team and last:

“I think our offense was more flowing (today). Last year we were really stagnant and we wouldn’t move the ball. This year we got people in good open positions and good shots.”

On if there is more of an emphasis on getting the ball in to the low post this year:

“Definitely, this year it’s been the low post. I just think once you go in the low post, and all our posts can do things, that people will have to start playing in and we’ll get open shots. After a while I know that I kicked it out to Bri and she got two shots and I kicked it out to Abby (Dowd) to start getting shots and those are our shooters, so that’s what we want to do. We don’t want to just try to have more shots without the low post touches.”

Quoting head coach Agnus Berenato

On the noticeable improvements of this year’s team:

“I’ll be honest with you, I’m ecstatic that this game is over. I had a lot of fun, and I think the players had a lot of fun. I feel that we really pushed the ball in transition, and a lot of that was because of defense and rebounding. I thought we executed. I don’t know the last time that we’ve had 94 points. One of my guest coaches, even though I know she was being sarcastic, I love her just the same, but with a minute and a half to go she said, ‘we have 84, 85 points.’ And she said, ‘Agnes, this Pitt team last year playing against no one would score 80 points.’ I just think that we’ve come a long way and I said, ‘that’s the difference.’ I said it’s the difference between freshmen and sophomores in year.”

On the Panthers’ overall style of play today:

“I think that, you know, we want to try and have enough tempo, push the ball and hit shots and we know that we’re going to miss shots. I was disappointed in the first half in that we missed free throws and in the second half we came back. It really helped out. I thought we rebounded the glass really well in the first half but in the second half we didn’t rebound the glass at all, and that was disappointing. But I’m really proud of the team. I’m proud of the freshmen, they didn’t play like freshmen (today). I thought (Brianna) Kiesel did a great job at being the coach on the court and I thought Chyna Golden did a great job at anchoring down in the paint.”

On the impact of having a young team on the court:
“I think definitely it has to do with us being a year older, we’re still a really young team. We’re one of the five youngest teams in the nation this year. But I think (Brianna Kiesel) makes better decisions and I think that Chyna (Golden), her defense, to me, was what spurred her offense. People were probably surprised in the beginning when she made our first 10 points. But we’re not surprised by that. Chyna worked very, very hard on her game this summer, she’s work hard in the fall. I think we still have to define our roles and everybody has to understand our roles.”
