POST-GAME QUOTE SHEET

Mount St. Mary’s at Pitt, Petersen Events Center, November 26, 2013

Quoting Head Coach Suzie McConnell-Serio

Opening Statement:

“This was a great win for us looking at the stat sheet. We had three players with double-doubles.  Asia Logan, Brianna Kiesel and Ashlee Anderson all had double-doubles. It was an impressive game across the board. This was a great team win. One of the things we have been emphasizing is ball movement, making the extra pass and making the game easier for your teammates. I saw a lot of that tonight.  We had great penetration and kick outs to shooters.  We had great penetration and dump downs to our post players.

We got off to a rocky start. We missed three layups and missed a couple layups early. I was almost surprised to be getting easy opportunities early in the game but I think we settled down and our players responded throughout the course of the game. I thought our press was effective. We were able to change up the way we started the game. Instead of being strictly man-to-man we were able to go man-to-zone. Our players felt comfortable. We have been trying to find out what works with the personnel that we have and we found something right now that we are comfortable with. A great win going into Thanksgiving break. We got contributions across the board. Fred [Frederique Potvin] came off the bench and shot the ball well and did other things well.”

On if Loliya Briggs’ behind the back pass was the turning point in the game:

“I don’t know if there was one play. That’s something we continue to emphasize on the bench and halftime.  We talk to our players about making the extra pass to make it easier for each other. So many times we catch the ball, put it on the floor or hold it and not see the next play. We want to see who’s open whether it’s a post player posting up to the next pass or that guard seeing the reverse pass or inside pass open. We are trying to get them more and more comfortable with the offenses and what we are trying to run. Obviously that was a great play. We have been working on our decision making in transition because in previous games we have had two on one or three on two situations and have come up empty. We have emphasized creating scoring opportunities in those situations.”

Quoting senior forward Asia Logan

On tonight’s win:

“It means a lot. We played team ball today. We moved the ball a lot and got a lot of players open shots. ”

On rebounding:

“Coach told us to box out and go after rebounds. Mount St. Mary’s was a little undersized so we continued going at them offensively and defensively.”

On growth of freshman guard, Frederique Potvin:

“We tell her to shoot when she gets the ball and that’s what she did today. The outcome was 16 points.”

Quoting senior guard Ashlee Anderson

On tonight’s win:

“Tonight’s win means that our offense and defense was at a high intensity.”

 On dominating in the paint:

“One thing we focused on coming into the game was that we knew we had a height advantage and knew we needed to get the post involved. Coach (Serio) has been telling us to attack the basket and that is one of the things we did well today. We did a good job of knocking down shots and finding our shooters.”

On rebounding:

“Coach (Serio) talked about how we need to get more rebounds offensively. In our previous games we haven’t been going to the glass offensively. I consciously try to make an effort to try and go to the boards. It seemed like the whole team tried to do that today.”

On growth of freshman guard, Frederique Potvin:

“Coming into the season we knew that she was our true shooter so we try to get her open looks and set her up in transition. She has confidence in herself and that is a positive.”
