PITTSBURGH-Four players tallied double figures in scoring as the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team defeated crosstown-rival Robert Morris, 88-53, Tuesday night at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Panthers improved to 2-2 on the season after winning their second consecutive contest.
Junior Brooke Stewart and sophomore Sheila Stufflet both drained 15 points to lead Pittsburgh, while junior Laine Selwyn and sophomore Amy Kunich poured in 12 and 11 points, respectively.
After only gaining a one-point advantage with 13:53 remaining in the first half, Pittsburgh went on an 8-0 run and entered the locker room with a 41-23 lead.
Pittsburgh came out on fire in the second half, embarking on a 12-0 run and never looking back en route to the 35-point triumph.
The Panthers shot a season-best 57 percent from the field, while holding the Colonials to just 30 percent shooting. For the fourth game this year, Pittsburgh outrebounded its opponent, this time snaring 52 boards to Robert Morris' 26.
Mysty Bekavac paced the Colonials with 15 points, while Missy Spangler and Candace John pitched in 11 points apiece.
Pittsburgh next takes to the court this weekend as it travels to the Arizona Basketball Classic. The Panthers play Wisconsin on Friday at 6 p.m. MST at the McKale Center and, depending on the outcome of their game and the Holy Cross-Arizona game, play on Sunday at either 1 or 3 p.m.
