PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team suffered a 63-54 defeat to area-rival Duquesne on Saturday night at Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers (3-5, 0-1 Big East) fell to the Dukes for the first time at home in the 20th game in the all-time series.

Junior Laine Selwyn (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) poured in 18 points for Pittsburgh, including 7-of-9 free throws, and added six boards and four assists. Junior Brooke Stewart (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) added 16 points with four 3-pointers, while junior Dallas Williams (Mason, Ohio/Mason) chipped in with 11 points.

After falling behind by as many as seven points (11-4) early on, the Panthers grabbed their first lead of the contest, 23-22, with just over a minute remaining in the first half. The Dukes quickly responded with four unanswered points to take a 26-23 halftime advantage.

In the second half, Pittsburgh's Haley Harguth (Beaverton, Ore./Beaverton) connected on a deep 3-pointer to give the Blue and Gold its largest lead, 49-46, at the 6:50 mark. However, Duquesne finished the game on a 17-5 run to secure the victory.

Pittsburgh managed to shoot only 29 percent from the field while the Dukes hit 46 percent of its shots. The Panthers did hold a narrow edge on the boards (38-37), but shot just 64 percent from the free throw line.

Candace Futrell had a game-high-tying 18 points for Duquesne, while Oxana Shetko added 10 points and Shiri Sharon pulled down 10 boards.

Pittsburgh takes a week off for class finals and returns to action next Sunday at Penn State. Tip off at State College is slated for 2 p.m.
