Quoting Pitt Head Coach Agnus Berenato

Opening statement:

“It was a great win for our program. We were down 15, and in those circumstances there can be a tendency to totally fall away, but the team hung in there. We really got after them with a strong presence on the entire court, which we’ve never done before. It was a really slow game. We were scoring when the clock was off because of how many times we got to go to the free throw line, which was good. Leeza Burdgess set the tone in the second half. We had to attack and had to go into the middle, and in the end everybody contributed.”

On their performance in the second half:

“At halftime, we felt like we needed to get more from our posts. We also felt like we needed to pick up our defensive presence. There wasn’t a lot of change that needed to happen as far as plays, so we just tried to be more consistent on offense and making our shots. As far as defense, we started to double up on their kids.”

On their future performance against Big East opponents:

“For us this year, we knew there weren’t going to be any easy games. It doesn’t matter the opponent, Big East team or not because of our team’s demographics. There have been a lot of upsets in the Big East basketball programs so far this season, so I told my girls that we have to focus on every possession, every minute and every game. We can’t look beyond the moment we are in because then we’ll feel overwhelmed.”

Quoting Leeza Burdgess, Redshirt Sophomore Center:

On learning and growing from tough games:

“I know I definitely can’t foul far away from the basket because it really took away from what I could have done to help the team. I have to be more physical and aggressive when it comes to offense. It took me until the second half to try and start doing something. I learned I can’t wait that long because my team needs me.”
