Women's Basketball Defeats Providence, 64-51

Cheron Taylor (17 points, 11 rebounds) and Latoya Kincaid (18 points, 10 rebounds) each posted double-doubles to lead the Panthers.

    PITTSBURGHCheron Taylor and Latoya Kincaid each posted double-doubles as Pittsburgh’s women’s basketball team notched its first Big East win of the season with a 64-51 victory over Providence on Saturday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center. The Panthers improved to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in the conference, while the Friars fell to 4-10 and 0-3.

    Taylor (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King), making only her second career start, finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds, both career highs. Kincaid (West Helena, Ark./Central) added a game-high 18 points and pulled down 10 caroms for Pittsburgh.

    After falling behind 8-3 five minutes into the game, the Panthers responded with an 18-8 run to take a five-point lead (21-16) at the 8:32 mark of the half on a 3-pointer by Brooke Hughes (Wheelersburg, Ohio/South Webster). Providence closed the gap to 25-22 at intermission.

    In the second half, Pittsburgh took momentum and stretched its lead to 16 points, 42-26, by the 13:10 mark of the game. Kincaid sparked the run by scoring 10 of the Panthers’ first 17 in the half. The lead ballooned to as many as 17 points late in the game before Pittsburgh closed with the 13-point victory.

    Both teams shot 42 percent from the field, but the Panthers hit 36 percent (5 of 14) from behind the arc to the Friars’ 15 percent (2 of 13). Pittsburgh struggled from the free-throw line, making just 7 of 13 (54 percent) while Providence hit 85 percent (11 of 13) from the charity stripe.

    Jessica Allen (Salem, Conn./New London) added 12 points on four 3-pointers for the Panthers. Hughes, in her first career start, dished out a career-high six assists to go along with five points.

    Brooke Freeburg led the Friars with 14 points.

    Pittsburgh hits the road on Wednesday, Jan. 14, as it travels to Seton Hall. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Walsh Gym.

    NOTES: Pittsburgh had 45 rebounds while holding Providence to just 19...the teams combined for 43 turnovers (Pittsburgh 23, Providence 20)...the two double-doubles for the Panthers were the first time since Dec. 7, 2002, at Florida Atlantic that they had two in the same game. Amy Kunich (12 points, 14 assists) and Laine Selwyn (11 points, 12 assists) accomplished the feat for Pittsburgh.
