Pittsburgh Drops 77-68 Decision at No. 21 Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Pittsburgh’s women’s basketball team committed 27 turnovers and fell to No. 21 Miami, 77-68, Saturday night at the Convocation Center. The Panthers dropped to 6-9 overall and 2-3 in the Big East, while the Hurricanes improved to 15-1 and 4-1.
Miami jumped out to 16-8 at the 12:36 mark of the first half after two free throws from Tatjana Marincic. However, Pittsburgh fought back with a 8-2 run and pulled to within two points, 18-16, midway through the half.
The Hurricanes stretched the lead to 15 points on a layup by Imani Dhahbu and went to the locker room with a 38-24 advantage.
Trailing 53-36 with 10:38 left in the game, Pittsburgh rallied and cut the lead to seven points, 63-56, on two free throws by Latoya Kincaid. The Hurricanes held off the Panthers’ rally to earn their fourth straight victory in the series.
Kincaid finished with a game-high 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting and pulled down a team-best eight boards. She scored 19 of her 21 markers in the second half and also added two steals. Jennifer Brown tallied 15 points for Pittsburgh.
Both teams shot 42 percent from the field. Pittsburgh was 22-of-29 (76 percent) from the foul line compared to the Hurricanes’ 77 percent (24 of 31) foul shooting.
Shaquana Wilkins led Miami with 20 points and 15 rebounds.
Pittsburgh returns home to face No. 19/23 Virginia Tech on Wednesday night. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. at the Petersen Events Center.
NOTES: Pittsburgh trails the all-time series in Miami 10-1…the Hurricanes finished with 21 steals to the Panthers’ eight…Pittsburgh shot 44 percent (4 of 9) from behind the 3-point arc while Miami hit just 1-of-10 shots (10 percent)…Brown added seven rebounds and four blocks in 29 minutes for the Panthers.
