QUEENS, N.Y. – Despite limiting St. John’s to just 24 percent shooting for the game, Pittsburgh’s women’s basketball team had trouble shooting itself as it fell to the Red Storm, 49-39, Saturday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena. The Panthers lost their fifth straight game and dropped to 11-11 overall and 3-8 in the Big East while St. John’s improved to 17-6 and 6-6 in the conference.

Pittsburgh held the Red Storm to a dismal 3-of-23 shooting (13 percent) in the second half and 2 of 11 (18 percent) from 3-point range. However, the Panthers were just 13 of 51 (26 percent) from the field overall and 2 of 12 (17 percent) from behind the arc. Pittsburgh hit just 11-of-19 free throws (58 percent) while St. John’s connected on 72 percent (21 of 29) of its charity attempts.

The Panthers jumped out to an early 7-4 lead on a Jennifer Brown jumper at the 17:43 mark of the first half. However, they scored just two points over the next eight minutes and only 13 points the rest of the half as they trailed 27-20 at intermission.

In the second half, Amy Kunich drained a 3-pointer four minutes in to close the gap to five points, 28-23. Once again, though, Pittsburgh went cold from the field and St. John’s went on an 11-3 spurt to grab a 13-point advantage.

The Panthers pulled to within seven points on three occasions in the final seven minutes but could never get closer as they dropped their fourth straight game in the series history against the Red Storm.

Marcedes Walker led the Panthers with 12 points. Brown finished with 10 points and a team-high nine boards.

Angela Clark posted a double-double for St. John’s, tallying 13 points and 16 rebounds.

Pittsburgh is back in action on Wednesday as it hosts West Virginia. Tip-off at the Petersen Events Center is set for 7 p.m.
