Pittsburgh Falls to Georgetown, 72-61, in Women's Hoops Action

    PITTSBURGH—Sophomore Katie Histed led four Pittsburgh players in double figures but it was not enough as the Panthers fell to Georgetown, 72-61, Saturday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center. Pittsburgh dropped its eighth straight game and fell to 6-16 overall and 2-10 in the Big East. The Hoyas improved to 11-12 and 5-7 in the conference.

    Georgetown scored the game’s initial eight points thanks to two consecutive 3-pointers by Mary Lisicky. The Hoyas then led by as many as 12 points, 18-6, midway through the first half before Pittsburgh mounted a rally to get back into the contest.

    The Panthers closed the gap to four points, 27-23, on two free throws by Histed (Waverly, N.Y./Waverly) with 2:51 remaining in the frame. However, Georgetown built the lead back to 11 points and entered halftime with a nine-point advantage, 34-25.

    In the second half, Pittsburgh again clawed its way to within four points on separate occasions, but it could never get any closer. A 10-0 Hoya run after the scored as 40-36 put the game in Georgetown’s control at the 12:59 mark. The Hoyas upped their lead to as many as 17 points (68-51) before finishing with the 11-point victory.

    For the game, the Panthers shot 34 percent (22 of 64) from the field but hit 44 percent (8 of 18) from behind the 3-point arc. Georgetown hit 56 percent (30 of 54) of its field goals and 36 percent (4 of 11) of its 3-point attempts. Pittsburgh outrebounded the Hoyas, 39-34.

    Histed led Pittsburgh with 13 points, while Latoya Kincaid (West Helena, Ark./Central) and Sheila Stufflet (Sinking Spring, Pa./Sinking Spring) added 11 each. Brooke Hughes (Wheelersburg, Ohio/South Webster) added 10 points off the bench.

    Lisicky posted a game-high 16 points to lead Georgetown.

    Pittsburgh hits the road to battle two-time defending national champion Connecticut on Tuesday night at the Hartford Civic Center. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. as the Panthers look to snap the Huskies’ 16-game winning streak in the all-time series.

    NOTES: Georgetown had 25 assists to the Panthers’ 13...Pittsburgh hit 60 percent (9 of 15) from the foul line while the Hoyas connected on 57 percent (8 of 14) of its charity attempts...the Panthers had 14 turnovers and Georgetown finished with 16.
