Women's Basketball Falls to Connecticut 97-42

HARTFORD – Pittsburgh’s women’s basketball could not match up against the top-ranked team in the country as it fell to Connecticut, 97-42, on Tuesday night at the Hartford Civic Center in front of 16,294. The Panthers dropped their ninth straight game and fell to 6-17 overall and 2-11 in the Big East.
In the first half, Pittsburgh pulled to within four points, 17-13, at the 13-minute mark as Katie Histed hit a jumper and give the Panthers life. However, the Huskies’ experience and depth began to take over as they went on an 11-0 run over the next two minutes to grab a 28-13 advantage.
Connecticut continued to pour it on and extended its lead to 37 points (56-19) near the end of the half before entering the half with a 56-21 advantage. In the first 20 minutes, the Huskies shot 64 percent (21 of 33) from the field while Pittsburgh hit 45 percent (9 of 20) of its field goals.
Connecticut pushed its lead to 57 points late in the game and easily defeated the Panthers for the 17th consecutive time.
For the game, Pittsburgh shot 34 percent (16 of 47) from the field and 40 percent (4 of 10) from behind the 3-point arc. The Huskies connected on 60 percent (37 of 62) of their field goals and 60 percent (12 of 20) of their 3-pointers.
Histed and Jennifer Brown each posted 12 points to lead Pittsburgh. Brown added five rebounds and four blocks in 29 minutes.
Ashley Battle led four Connecticut players in double figures, finishing with 15 points.
Pittsburgh returns home to face Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. but all 12,508 seats are sold out.
NOTES: Pittsburgh was outrebounded, 40-24…the Huskies had 50 points in the paint while the Panthers had 14.
