HARTFORD, Conn. - Pitt women's basketball freshman Brianna Kiesel was named to the Big East All-Freshman Team, it was announced by the league on Thursday. The point guard was a unanimous selection in a vote among the 15 competing head coaches.
The Utica, N.Y. native leads the Panthers in scoring (13.2) and assists (3.0). Kiesel has registered double figure scoring in 19 of 29 games, including seven of the past nine contests. She has tallied 15 or more points in 12 games, while posting 20 or more in a team-best six showings.
Kiesel - the only Pitt player to start all 29 games this season - also leads the team in minutes (36.2) which is ranked second in the Big East. She has logged 38 or more minutes in 12 games and 35 or more in 19 contests.
The guard, who graduated from Thomas Proctor High School a year ago as the program's all-time leading scorer, needs 12 points to enter the top-five scoring chart by a Pitt freshman. Kiesel's 13.2 points per game are the most for a Panthers freshman since Marcedes Walker in 2004-05 (13.3 ppg).
Kiesel set a Petersen Events Center record earlier this season when she drained 15 free throws in a win over Central Michigan on Nov. 20. The previous record had stood since 2002 (women's) and 2006 (men's), respectively.
Kiesel is the 13th Pitt women's basketball student-athlete to earn All-Freshman and/or All-Rookie Big East honors.
