Women's Hoops Inks Marcedes Walker to National Letter of Intent 5/3/2004
PITTSBURGH "We are very excited that Marcedes has signed with the University of Pittsburgh," Berenato said. "She is an impact player and fills a void for our team at the center position. Marcedes can be dominant in the paint and is physically able to control the game underneath the basket. She has tremendous skills and will be a wonderful addition to an already great recruiting class." A 6-foot-3 center, Walker (Philadelphia, Pa./University City) led University City to the Philadelphia City League championship game this past season after posting a 20-7 record. She averaged 21.9 points and 8.9 rebounds per game as a senior and was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder her final three years. Walker was a three-time All-City selection in Philadelphia and a two-time McDonald’s Honorable Mention All-American. She attended the Adidas Basketball Camp in Atlanta, Ga., last summer and was among the top players in the elite camp. Walker, who also competed in track and field and volleyball, earned all-state and all-district for basketball as a senior. A team captain the past three years, Walker had a career-high 33 points against Ben Franklin and pulled down a personal-best 20 rebounds against Coolidge. Berenato now has four recruits in her first recruiting class at Pittsburgh. During the November signing period, Karlyle Lim (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel) and Viktoria "Vika" Sholokhova (St. Petersburg, Russia/Sacred Heart High [N.J.]) both committed to the Panthers. Last week, Pittsburgh signed standout guard Shavonte Zellous (Orlando, Fla./Jones High).
