GREENSBURG, Pa. -
Pitt head coach Agnus Berenato was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters by Seton Hill University prior to her commencement speech to the school on May 9, 2009.
Berenato was recognized for her efforts on and off the court and in building the Pitt women’s basketball program into a national success. On her honorary diploma presented to her by Seton Hill President JoAnne W. Boyle, Ph.D., it stated “Family, colleagues, students and friends describe you as ‘genuine,’ ‘a master motivator,’ ‘a live ball of action,’ ‘a real go-getter,’ ‘loyal,’ and finally ‘amazing.’”
Throughout her six years at the helm, Berenato has led the Panthers to new heights including back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in 2008 and 2009. Pitt’s first-ever WNBA draft pick, Shavonte Zellous, is also the program’s first All-American. Recently, Pitt sophomore center Pepper Wilson was named as a USA Basketball U19 World Championship team finalist and will compete for a chance to play for the USA in Thailand later this summer.
Berenato’s off the court contributions have been just as impressive, as she was named the Dapper Dan Sportswoman of the Year twice and continually encourages community involvement and service from her players.
Berenato was joined by John M. Ferretti and Silvia M. Ferretti, who also received honorary degrees from Seton Hill.
