PITTSBURGH - University of Pittsburgh's head women's basketball coach Agnus Berenato will throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Tuesday night, Sept. 22, at PNC Park as the Pirates take on Cincinnati at 7:05 p.m.
It has been a busy summer for Berenato as she recently returned from a goodwill tour overseas which was sponsored by the United States Army. She joined four other college basketball coaches on the tour to boost morale to men and women on active duty in throughout the Middle East region.
In six seasons at the head of the Pitt women's team, Berenato has already made history within the program. In 2007-08, she led the Panthers to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in school history. Last season, she led the team to the Sweet Sixteen for the second year in a row. She also coached Pitt's first women's basketball player to be named an All-American, a three-time All Big East First Team selection and a WNBA draft pick, Shavonte Zellous.
The Panthers will host Pitt Fan Fest and the Maggie Dixon Heart Health Fair in conjunction with the men's basketball team on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Petersen Events Center. The women open up action with an exhibition game against Seton Hill on Tuesday, Nov. 10. The team's first game of the regular season is scheduled for Nov. 17 against North Florida at 11 a.m. as part of "School Day", a promotional event for local elementary schools.
