PITTSBURGH - Pitt women's basketball officially begins a new era when its 40th campaign tips off on Friday at 11 a.m. as the Panthers host the Patriot League's Bucknell Bison at the Petersen Events Center.
The game marks the regular-season debut for first-year Pitt head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio and the first game for the women's basketball program as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
McConnell-Serio comes to Pitt after six seasons as the head caoch at neighboring Duquesne University. A Pittsburgh native, McConnell-Serio played at Seton-LaSalle Catholic High School before enjoying a tremendous collegiate career at Penn State, where she became the first Lady Lion player to earn an All-America first team nod.
McConnell-Serio, a 2008 member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, is still today the NCAA leader in career assists (1,307/1984-88) and holds the top mark in assist-per-game average for an entire season (11.8/game in 1987). Her seven triple-doubles are also tied for the best-ever mark in NCAA play.
McConnell-Serio is a two-time United States Olympic medalist (Gold, 1988; Bronze, 1992) and also played with the Cleveland Rockers and later coached the Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA - earning WNBA Coach of the Year honors.
The game also marks the fifth-annual School Day, with the largest crowd of elementary and middle schoolers in School Day history expected to attend the game.
The students and fans in attendance will see a Pitt team that returns all five starters and its top eight scorers from the 2012-13 squad.
The Panthers excelled in their only exhibition contest, defeating California (Pa.) by a score of 97-67 on Sunday, Nov. 3. Pitt was led by 6-foot-11 redshirt freshman Marvadene `Bubbles' Anderson, who scored 20 points on 10-for-11 shooting off the bench. Returning starters Asia Logan (14 points), Ashlee Anderson (12 points) and Brianna Kiesel (11 points) also all reached double figures in the victory.
This contest is also the first tip - men's or women's - of the 2013-14 college basketball season. The earliest men's contest is between Eastern Michigan and Albion and tips at noon, while two women's games (Jacksonville vs. Florida A&M and Bluefield vs. Marshall) start their respective seasons at 11:30 a.m.
