• The Panthers return three starters and eight players from last season's roster.
• Today is the fourth-annual School Day game (11 a.m. tip) The Panthers are 27-11 all-time in regular season openers.
PITTSBURGH - Pitt women's basketball begins its 39th season on Friday, Nov. 9 when it opens its season against Youngstown State at 11 a.m.The Panthers and Penguins will meet for the 18th time in program history with Pitt holding a 14-3 advantage.
Over 3,500 local elementary and middle schoolers are expected to attend the fourth-annual School Day.
Head Coach Agnus Berenato commences her 29th season overall and 10th season at Pitt on Friday. She is just seven wins shy of becoming the all-time winningest coach in Panthers history.
Pitt enter the 2012-13 season with three starters and nine players overall from a season ago. Under Coach Berenato, Pitt fields a 92-42 record vs. non-conference opponents overall and a 44-12 mark in non-conference games at the Petersen Events Center.
Pitt posted a a 94-61 win over Lock Haven in its only exhibition contest on Saturday, Nov. 3.Guard Brianna Kiesel posted a team-high 23 points, 16 of those in the second half. The sophomore also added team-highs in rebounds (7), assists (5) and steals (6) to her stat line. Sophomore Chyna Golden had 18 points, while junior Asia Logan (Baltimore, Md.) added 17 points for the Panthers.
The contest is the earliest in Division I women's basketball, tied with Navy and Iona who also tip at the 11 a.m. hour.
Friday's game begins a stretch of three games over a five-day span. Pitt entertains William & Mary on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. at the Petersen Events Center and hosts Siena on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers will honor all veterans in attendance at the Nov. 11 game in observance of Veteran's Day. All active military and veterans will get in free with ID. Pitt plays Siena in its former home confines, Fitzgerald Field House. Lunchtime specials will be available as fans are encouraged to spend their lunchtime break with the Panthers.
