Last Game Out
Redshirt junior Abby Dowd drained the game-winning shot – a three-pointer – with 4.9 seconds remaining to lift Pitt to a 58-57 win over Brown in women’s basketball non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center. The victory was the fourth-straight, the longest winning streak for the Panthers (4-1) since the 2009-10 season.
Dowd finished with a season-high nine points, all from behind the arc. Redshirt junior Ashlee Anderson paced the Panthers in scoring with 16 points – all in the second half. The guard from Chicago added seven rebounds and four steals to the stat sheet.
Sophomore Chyna Golden chipped in a career-tying 10 points for the Panthers. Junior Asia Logan and sophomore Brianna Kiesel led the squad in rebounding with 10 and nine boards, respectively.
Tonight’s matchup at the Petersen Events Center marks a new rivalry between the Panthers and the Lancers as this is the first meeting in program history. Pitt is facing off with a Big South member team for the sixth time in program history. The Panthers hold a 3-2 record versus the league with both losses coming to High Point – the first in 1978 and the second occurring last season. With tonight’s contest, Pitt has met a Big South opponent each of the past three seasons
Longwood is located in Farmville, Va. - 64,4 miles from the capital city of Richmond. The school upgraded to Division I during the 2003-04 season and joined the Big South Conference as the league’s 12th member on July 1, 2012.
The Lancers - who are the midst of eight-straight away games - are paced in scoring and rebounding by Chelsea Coward with 18.0 points and 11.4 rebounds per game. Coward has three double-doubles on the season. Crystal Smith is averaging 12.6 points per contest. Longwood is 1-4 on the season and will not return to its home confines until Jan. 3.
The Panthers are 4-1 to start the 2012-13 season, having captured four consecutive wins. The last time a Pitt team won four games in a row was the 2009-10 season. The Panthers won eight-straight over a span to start that campaign (Nov. 17 - Dec. 8).
Come From Behind
The Panthers were 2-21 last season when trailing at the half. Pitt is 2-0 this season when down after 20 minutes having posted wins over William & Mary and lastly, Brown on Saturday. Pitt is 2-1 this season when losing with five minutes to go in a game and was 1-21 in the same position last season.
The Panthers rallied from 12-down to defeat Brown, 58-57, on Saturday afternoon. Previously this season, Pitt had come-from-behind over William & Mary by 11 points. The win was the largest come-from- behind victory since a 74-69 overtime over Lafayette last season (12/31/11 – 15 points down).
The Panthers are averaging 19.2 offensive rebounds a game- the best total in the Big East. Junior Asia Logan is third in the BE among individual leaders in the category with 5.4 offensive boards a game. Pitt had 26 offensive boards (out of 74 shots) in the last game out versus Brown - but only had 15 second chance points.
