Pitt vs. Maryland/Michigan/Temple Woman's Results

COLLEGE PARK, Md.--The Pitt gymnastics team tallied a team score of 191.600 Saturday afternoon in the Comcast Pavilion, good enough for third place in a quad-meet with host-Maryland, Michigan and Temple. The Wolverines captured the meet title with a score of 196.150, while the Terps took second, scoring a season-best 194.250. Temple rounded-out the scoring with a 190.025, good enough for fourth.

 

The Panthers' (2-13, 1-3) night was highlighted by two gymnasts achieving career-high marks. Freshman Molly Moyer (Telford, Pa./Homeschooled) scored a career-best 9.725 on beam, while teammate Krista Rubini (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) posted a career-best 9.700 on floor.

 

Alix Croop (Allentown, Pa./Bridgeway Academy) also tallied strong numbers as she tied her career-high score of 9.750 on beam and notched her second-highest marks of the season on bars with a 9.775. Croop led the Panthers to their highest team score on bars in 2008, as Pitt tallied a 48.175 on the event.


 

 

 

Two other Panthers noted scores of 9.700 or better on bars as Samantha DeBone (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) scored a 9.750 and all-around competitor Shannon Vafiadou (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) notched a 9.700.

 

DeBone led the Panthers on beam with a 9.775, while teammate Croop tied her career-best mark on the event, scoring a 9.750. Moyer rounded-out Pitt's top three finishers on beam with her career-high score of 9.725.

 

Moyer's team-high, 9.825 performance on floor was supplemented by Vafiadou's 9.725 and Rubini's career-high mark of 9.700. Moyer captured fifth place on the event, while Vafiadou earned a tenth-place finish.

 

Pitt was led on vault by Vafiadou and Anya Chayka (Germantown, Md./Richard Montgomery), both tallying scores of 9.650. Moyer rounded-out the Panthers' top three with a 9.600. Vafiadou was Pitt's lone all around competitor for the eighth-straight meet as she posted a 38.775, capturing third in the all-around competition.

 

The Panthers will conclude their 2008 regular season on March 22, as they host a quad-meet at the Fitzgerald Field House. Cornell and Temple will join EAGL opponent North Carolina for the 1 p.m. contest. The following week, Pitt will travel to Morgantown, W.Va. for the EAGL Championships.
