PITTSBURGH - Senior Alyssa Adrian claimed the vault and uneven bars titles for the Pitt gymnastics squad Saturday night on Senior Night as the Panthers scored a 194.250 against No. 12 Auburn.
"We ran into the perfect storm tonight," said head coach Debbie Yohman. We had a flat performance and tough judging. We really didn't compete as badly as the score indicated with no major mistakes, but a lot of weaknesses certainly added up. And, it didn't help that the judging was the tightest we've faced all year and it was pretty much the same for Auburn so this meet didn't help either of us out.
"It's too bad because we warmed up pretty well and started out strong on vault. But from there it was kind of a downward cycle. They hit us hard and we kept giving them more of an opportunity to nickel and dime us. Except where we didn't and we still got hit. So, we got this meet out of the way and hopefully it will fire the team up for EAGL weekend!"
Adrian had a hot start to the night, scoring a career-high 9.850 on the vault and followed it up with a 9.80 on the uneven bars for the top score of the night.
The Panthers scored their top team score of the night on vault with a 48.900. Freshman Lisa Soto followed up Adrian with a second place finish with a 9.825. Rounding out the top six for Pitt were Kori Macdonald and Haley Sedgewick each with a 9.750.
Adrian's 9.80 led the way to Pitt's 48.325 team score on the uneven bars. Maya Ketner was Pitt's next scorer, tying for sixth, with a 9.725.
On the balance beam, the Panthers scored a 48.400, led by Soto. The rookie was the lone Pitt representative in the top six with a 9.775.
Senior Alexa Riech completed her Pitt career at Fitzgerald Field House with a 9.65 on the floor exercise. Adrian scored a 38.875 and Sedgewick finished the night with a 37.925 in the all-around.
Pitt will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championships on March 23 at 2 p.m.
