PITTSBURGH - The Pitt gymnastics team has been picked to finish fifth in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League's preseason coaches' poll. The Wolfpack of N.C. State was their unanimous selection to win the 2013 title.
The Panthers lose some key talent from the 2012 squad, which finished fifth in the league championships. Four seniors were lost to graduation, and top all-arounder and EAGL Rookie of the Year Haley Bodenheimer will sit out 2013 with an injury.
There is however, a wealth of new and young talent ready to step up and fill those roles. Yohman has stated that the team's depth could be at an all-time best. In Pitt's Blue-Gold exhibition meet against Kent State on Dec. 8, youth led the way for the Panthers. On the day, Pitt freshmen or sophomores accounted for 10 top-three scores.
"We're starting 2013 where we left of last year, however, we're not passionate about finishing in the same spot," said head coach Debbie Yohman. "We weren't happy or entirely satisfied or fulfilled at the end of the championship last year, and all our work and goal-setting aims for March. We use the poll to motivate and remind us that the other teams do as well!"
The Panthers begin the regular season on Friday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. in a home meet against West Virginia at Fitzgerald Field House. The meet will be streamed live on www.PittsburghPanthers.com and will air on Pitt Panthers Television on Comcast (channels 188 or 210) on Sunday.
