PITTSBURGH – The awards continue to roll in for freshman gymnast Alecia Petrikis, as she was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference Tuesday evening.
The honor is the second of the week for the Grove City, Pa., native as she was named the First National Bank Pitt Athlete of the Week Tuesday morning.
Petrikis made her collegiate debut Saturday evening against regional power Ohio State as the Panthers opened the 2017 season at Fitzgerald Field House. In front of the home crowd, Petrikis posted the team’s top score of 9.825 on floor exercise, tying with teammate Tracey Pearson for second place.
Just one of three Panthers to post a score of 9.800 or higher, Petrikis is one of four freshmen who contributed for head coach Debbie Yohman’s squad against the Buckeyes.
Petrikis and her teammates will return to action Friday evening, welcoming heated rival West Virginia for the first of two Backyard Brawls on the season. Action is set to get underway at 6:30 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House.
