PITTSBURGH - Pitt senior gymnast Katie O'Rourkehas been named as a co-EAGL Specialist of the Week for the opening week of the season, announced by the East Atlantic Gymnastics League.
"What a great way to start the season," said head coach Debbie Yohman. "Katie has been working so hard. I have said more than once she's in mid-season form already, which will have her routines looking sharp and even more confident by championship season. I think she's feeling good about that right now and this recognition will reinforce the work she's been doing."
O'Rourke earned the honor after registering two outstanding performances in Pitt's win over Towson on Friday night in their season-opener. The specialist scored a meet-best 9.85 on the beam and followed it up with another 9.85 on the floor, which tied teammate Lindsay Offuttfor first place. O'Rourke's beam score tied her career high.
O'Rourke, who is ranked in the top five in the league in both the beam and floor, shared the weekly honor with North Carolina sophomore Lexi Cappalli, who earned scores of 9.775 (vault), 9.875 (bars) and 9.875 (floor) in their win over N.C. State.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 18, when they travel to Michigan State for a 2 p.m. meet.
