The Pitt gymnastics team (1-5, 1-1 EAGL) will host non-conference opponent, No. 3 Florida, Sunday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m. at the Fitzgerald Field House. The meet is the Panthers first against a ranked opponent. The Gators are also the highest ranked team ever to visit the Field House.

 

Freshman Molly Moyer (Telford, Pa./Homeschooled) had another stellar performance against Rutgers where she placed first on both vault and the floor exercise. Moyer's finish on vault, a 9.800, marked her career high for the event. She also tied her career high 9.850 on the floor exercise for the event title. 


 

 

 

One of the Panthers with the best performances overall was junior Alix Croop (Allentown, Pa./Bridgewater Academy). Croop captured the bars title with a 9.800 and set career high scores on both the floor exercise and beam. On beam, Croop registered a 9.600 and tied for third place. She scored a 9.825 on the floor exercise, landing her in second place overall.

 

On beam, Anya Chayka (Germantown, Md./Richard Montgomery) stole the event title with a 9.725 finish. Chayka's performance against Rutgers was her season best.

 

Shannon Vafiadou (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) had great performances on the vault, floor exercise and the all around. Vafiadou registered career high scores on all three of the events, including her 9.750 second place finish on vault. On the floor exercise, she placed fifth and posted a score of 9.625. She placed second in the all-around, setting a career high 37.875 points.

 

The last time Pitt competed against Florida was on March 18, 2005, where the Panthers lost 197.200- 192.550. Pitt is 0-5 in meets against the Gators, however this meet marks the first time since 1985 that the Gators have come to compete in Pittsburgh.

 

The No. 3 Gators are 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the SEC, with their lone loss coming from a 196.850-196.825 shortcoming against Georgia. Florida's season high score is a 197.125 and its low is a 195.250.
