GYMNASTICS TO TAKE ON PENN STATE IN ANNUAL RIVALRY
Feb. 9, 2007 PITTSBURGH - Pitt has been on a winning streak lately, picking up five wins in the last two meets. The Panthers (6-2, 3-1 EAGL) will remain on the road this week when they travel to No. 18 Penn State (9-3, 1-0 Big Ten). The annual meeting with the Nittany Lions is scheduled for 7 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 10. For the second week in a row, the Panthers captured every event title when they defeated Rutgers, SUNY Brockport and Yale last weekend. Senior Andrea Arlotta (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) earned conference honors for the second consecutive week after winning the uneven bars, floor exercise and all-around. Freshman Dani Bryan (Germantown, Md./Northwest) won the vault competition with a career-high 9.875. Sophomore Anya Chayka (Germantown, Md./Richard Montgomery) scored a career-high 9.775 on the balance beam for first place. The team scored a season-high 192.950 to defeat the Scarlet Knights who took second with a 190.500. Pitt grabbed first and second on the vault, first and third on the uneven bars, first through third on the balance beam and first on the floor exercise. In prior seasons, Pitt was known for excelling on the floor exercise, but it has recently become successful on the vault and uneven bars. The Panthers are currently 21st in the NCAA on the uneven bars, and they haven't scored below a 48.000 on the vault this season. Throughout the 31-year history with Penn State, Pitt has only won two contests against the Nittany Lions and won the competition in 2004. Penn State is coming off a successful weekend, defeating West Virginia, Kent State, George Washington and Wilson College. They scored a season-high 195.625 and captured three event titles.
