Pitt gymnastics is set to host North Carolina and Maryland of the East Atlantic Gymnastics League in a tri meet at Fitzgerald Field House on Friday at 7 p.m.
“Now it’s really gut check time! And not because it’s down to the wire,” said head coach Debbie Yohman. “We lost Jacqui Lucci, who was chasing Brit Harris for the top bar spot, to an elbow injury. And at least on two events, if not all three, Lisa Soto will be out tomorrow with a tailbone injury. It’s been getting better daily but she’s still limited. Both are big shoes to fill but some kids have literally stepped up: Erika Reichert will step in on vaulting and looked good today. Haley Sedgewick got her bars ready to go in two days. We said she was in such good shape that her bar skills came back really quickly, plus she was able to put the dismount on both feet (including her bad ankle) today! And we’re going to give Nikki Pearson an opportunity on beam. Yet I feel like we’re ready for that one huge score so we’re going to go out and compete like it! No offense to the opponents coming in – we lost to UNC earlier in the season and we’re one-and-one with Maryland – but we’re the only ones we’re thinking about tomorrow!“
The meet will be broadcast live on ESPN3 with Kat Ghion and Kelsey Ainsworth calling the action. Pitt Panthers Television will re-air the meet on Saturday, March 8 at 1 p.m. on Comcast channels 188 or 210.
The Panthers are coming off their highest score of the season — a 195.075 on the road at NC State with Maryland and William & Mary. Pitt has been building on individual and team scores gradually throughout the season with multiple gymnasts hitting career highs in the past two weeks.
