PITTSBURGH - Pitt freshman Lisa Soto has been named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League's Rookie of the Week for her performance against Michigan State last weekend. Pitt has now won the last three EAGL rookie honors as freshman Lindsay Offutt has won the past two weeks.
"Congrats to Lisa! She is certainly competing strongly at just the right time," said head coach Debbie Yohman. "I don't think we've ever had as many different people contending each week for EAGL honors as Lisa easily could have been joined by Alyssa Adrian (all-around) and Brittney Harris (uneven bars). It's a great shout out to the entire team when the recognition can get passed around and shared like that."
Soto finished second on the vault with a 9.825, leading all Pitt scorers. On the balance beam, the freshman tied her personal best with a 9.80 and a third place finish. Soto rounded out her evening finishing fifth on the uneven bars with a 9.750.
Soto's efforts against Michigan State followed up her best performance of the season, against North Carolina on March 2, when she earned the vault (9.875) and bars (9.825) titles and scored the fifth-highest score on the beam (9.80). All of Soto's three scores were career highs for the rookie.
Pitt returns to action on Saturday, March 16 at 7 p.m. against Auburn for Senior Night at Fitzgerald Field House. The meet marks the final regular season meet for the Panthers.
