PITTSBURGH – Members of the University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team will be volunteering at the 2014 P&G Gymnastics Championships from Aug. 21-24 at the Consol Energy Center. The event will feature the best gymnasts the United States has to offer and serves as a key starting point for the athlete’s journey to reach the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
The Pitt gymnastics team will work the Fitness and Nutrition Zone on the concourse level at Consol Energy Center. The team will help teach kids the importance of fitness in a fun and engaging way. Activities in building strength, flexibility and cardiovascular exercise will be featured.
The Fitness and Nutrition Zone will be available on Aug. 21 from 6-7:45 p.m., Aug. 22 from 5:30-7:45 p.m. and Aug. 23 and 24 from 6-7:45 p.m.
There will be a wide variety of events and activities for fans to participate in during the weekend, including: the P&G Championships kick-off event, athlete autograph sessions and the Fitness and Nutrition Zone.
As for the main event, the women’s competition will kick off the weekend on Thursday, followed by the first day of men’s events on Friday. Day two of competition for the women will be on Saturday and the men will cap off the weekend on Sunday.
The women’s championships will include junior and senior level competitors such as Kyla Ross and Simone Biles. Ross is the lone performers from the 2012 “Fierce Five” Olympic team that won gold in London. Biles, 2013 world and national champion, also highlights the women’s competition. On the men’s side, all five performers from the 2012 Olympic team will be competing.
