PITTSBURGH - The Pitt gymnastics squad will begin the 2012-13 season on Saturday with their Blue-Gold exhibition meet versus Kent State at 1 p.m. The meet will be open to the public and held at Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers will introduce eight new team members as freshmen Tiara Chadran, Laura Kummerle, Jacqueline Lucci, Lindsay Offutt, Maebelle Pacheco, Nicole Pearson, Ellie Pikula and Lisa Sotojoining the squad.
"We have a very young team, but very good talent," said head coach Debbie Yohman. "We will be great when we all get on the same page. Some are turning the pages a little more slowly than others right now, due to injury or youth.
"Kori Macdonald and Katie O'Rourke are on the mend and doing great. Brittney Harrisshould be back this year on two or three events, but training to get back to the all-around and she looks stronger than she's ever been.
"We have lost our two top athletes from last year including Alicia Talucci to graduation, and Haley Bodenheimer to injury, so we need someone to pick up that slack. Freshman Lindsay Offutt is doing her job above expectations and our only senior, Alyssa Adrian, is working like crazy to compete all-around this year. Additionally, Haley Sedgewickhas upgraded on all events in both skills and consistency.
"We're excited with the depth that we have on each event and we're ready to compete in our house!"
Kent State lost four gymnasts from their 2012 squad that advanced to the NCAA Regional meet. They do, however, return their top competitor in junior Marie Case.
Pitt will officially open the 2013 season on Jan. 11 when they host West Virginia at 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House.
