Women's Soccer Signs 12 Athletes to a National Letter of Intent

Pitt women's soccer 2013 signing class represents three countries and six different states.

The University of Pittsburgh has named Greg Miller, the associate head coach at the Ohio State University, as the third head coach in the history of the Pitt women's soccer program.

The hiring was announced on Sunday, Jan. 1by University of Pittsburgh Athletic Director Steve Pederson.

"We are excited to have Greg Miller join the University of Pittsburgh as the head women's soccer coach. He has a long track record of success as a coach, including the consistent excellence established during his tenure at Ohio State," said Pederson. "Greg's experience in winning the Big Ten, regular appearances in the NCAA Tournament and a Final Four appearance last season give him a unique set of qualifications. Not only has he proven his ability to recruit and coach the finest players in the country, but he will lead us into the ACC, the top soccer conference in the country. We are thrilled to welcome Greg and his family to Pittsburgh".

In 11 years at Ohio State, which includes the last six as associate head coach, Miller helped guide the Buckeyes to three Big Ten Championships and seven NCAA Tournament berths.

"I am extremely excited and grateful to Steve Pederson, (Pitt Executive Associate Athletic Director) Donna Sanft and the entire Pitt Athletics department for the opportunity to lead the University of Pittsburgh women's soccer program," Miller said. "There are a host of things that attracted me to this job: the high academic reputation, the amazing campus and the new on-campus soccer facility are just a few. It is clear that Pitt is committed to taking the next step and I am confident in our future home in the ACC."

Sanft adds, "Pitt is a world class University with a beautiful campus and great athletics facilities. We have high aspirations for all of our teams, and I am confident Greg Miller will provide the leadership to take our women's soccer team to a nationally competitive level"

Ohio State claimed one of its most successful seasons in program history in 2010. The Buckeyes finished 17-5-2 on their way to a Big Ten regular season championship and an appearance in their first ever NCAA College Cup (Final Four).

Under the tutelage of Miller, Cassie Dickerson was named the 2010 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. The Buckeyes won three major conference awards that season as Paige Maxwell was voted the Offensive Player of the Year and head coach Lori Walker was selected as the Coach of the Year.

This past fall, Ohio State advanced to its second consecutive Sweet 16 with wins over Tennessee and Milwaukee in the first two rounds. The 2011 season marked the final year for a nine-member Scarlet and Gray senior class that compiled a school-record 51 victories.

In total, Miller has coached five consensus All-Americans, four freshman All-America honorees and 12 All-Big Ten First Team selections. Miller has helped to mentor 75 student-athletes to academic All-Big Ten accolades and eight NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-Americans.

With Miller on the coaching staff, the Buckeyes posted 10 or more wins on eight occasions and set the school record with 19 victories in 2004. OSU also set numerous records that season, including most goals (62), assists (63), shutouts (13) and goals-against average (0.67) and an appearance in the national quarterfinals.

Ohio State - under Miller' s defensive effort - has consistently been a difficult team for opponents' to score on. He has helped direct the Buckeyes to their top four seasons for fewest goals allowed (17 in 2003, 18 in 2004, 13 in 2009 and 15 in 2010).

"I am very proud of Greg and grateful for the 11 years he has helped us here at Ohio State," said Ohio State 14-year head coach Lori Walker. "His contributions to our excellence are deeply embedded in the program. Pittsburgh is a wonderful opportunity for Greg and his family. I am excited to watch him rebuild the Pitt women's soccer program."

Prior to Ohio State, Miller was an assistant coach at Butler University for two seasons (1999-2000).

A four-year member of the men's soccer team at Xavier, Miller graduated from the University with a degree in psychology in 1993.

Miller holds an "A" License from the U.S. Soccer Federation and is a Region II ODP staff coach. An active member of the NSCAA, he is also a staff coach with the Ohio Premier Soccer Club in Dublin, Ohio. Miller coached four years with the Indiana State Olympic Development Program and the Indiana Youth Soccer Association.

Miller, 40, is married to the former Amy Langhals. Amy, who served her alma mater - Ohio State - as an assistant golf coach was also a standout student-athlete on the women's golf team. She is a member of the school's Hall of Fame as a three-time All-Big Ten selection and honorable mention All-American. The couple has a 13-month old son, Colin.
