Roland Sturk begins his sixth season as head coach of the University of Pittsburgh's women's soccer team. Sturk, who was named as the University's first head coach for the Panthers inaugural season in 1996, led Pittsburgh to its first Big East Conference playoff berth in just its second year of league play in 1998.
Sturk brought to Pittsburgh a resume complete with national and international instruction at the amateur level. Before his Pittsburgh appointment, Sturk spent seven seasons as head women's soccer coach at Regis University, a Division II program in Denver, Colo. Sturk started the Regis program from scratch in 1989 and it eventually went on to capture the Colorado Athletic Conference championship in 1994.
Sturk, 52, guided Regis to a second-place finish at the 1994 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championships and was named the National Soccer Coaches' Association's (NSCA) Regional Coach of the Year.
"I firmly believe that coaching is teaching," Sturk said. "Not only the principles, techniques and tactics of a particular game, but the values and attitudes that will carry over into the classroom and one's personal life. I believe one's attitude and behavior off the field is intertwined with one's performance on the field."
A 1970 graduate of Boston College, with a bachelor's degree in management computer science, Sturk also earned a master's degree in secondary education in 1977 from the University of Denver. He received his Scottish FA Introductory "A" Coaching Certificate in Largs, Scotland, in July 1993, and his USSF National "A" License in 1992.
Sturk is currently the head coach for the Region I Olympic Development U15 Girls team and was named the chair of the Mid-Atlantic Region advisory committee for the NCAA in 2001. He will be involved in the selection of the 64 teams for the NCAA tournament in November.
