ANN ARBOR, Mich.—A Christina Ordonez goal in the 82nd minute gave Michigan a 1-0 women’s soccer win over Pitt Sunday afternoon at U-M Soccer Stadium.

The loss drops Pitt to 1-1-0 on the young season, while Michigan improves to 2-0-0. Coupled with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory at Eastern Michigan on Friday evening, the two weekend matches marked Pitt’s first regular season games under first-year head coach Greg Miller. The Panthers make their home debut at Ambrose Urbanic Field against Robert Morris on Wednesday, August 22 at 7 p.m.

“We made a shape change today to give ourselves a chance against a good Michigan team,” Miller said. “We had some early success but struggled to get into a consistent rhythm as the game went on. Nicole D'Agostino had a great day in goal and kept us in the game. After we went down a goal there was some real fight in us at the end. It's a good sign for future games this season.”

Through the game’s first 81 minutes, the two teams were locked in a 0-0 scoreless defensive battle.

Michigan took its 1-0 lead when Meghan Toohey slipped a ball behind Pitt’s defense to Ordonez, who took two dribbles and before tapping the ball into the back right corner of the net.

Pitt sophomore goalkeeper Nicole D’Agostino finished the game with a career-high nine saves. Through two games and 180 minutes played, D’Agostino has a 1.00 goals against average with 11 saves on 24 shots faced.

Michigan outshot Pitt 18-10 in the contest and took seven corner kicks to the Panthers’ two. Senior forward Ashley Cuba led Pitt with three shots, while junior Dana DelleFemine finished with two.

The two teams completed the first half deadlocked in a 0-0 tie. Michigan outshot Pitt 9-6 in the first half alone. D’Agostino made four first half saves including two key saves late in the half. Pitt’s best scoring opportunity came in the 13th minute on a Cuba shot that was saved by Michigan goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer.

Pitt and Michigan met for the first time in women’s soccer.
