Women's Soccer Drops 3-2 Double Overtime Decision to Dayton

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.--Pitt forced overtime after battling back from a 2-0 deficit, but it was not enough as Dayton scored a goal in the 104th minute and handed the Panthers a 3-2 double overtime decision Friday evening at the University of Illinois Soccer Tournament.
Pitt will play in Sunday's consolation game and will face the loser of Friday evening's second match featuring Iowa State and host No. 18 Illinois. The consolation match will be played on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Pitt drops to 0-2-0 on the year while Dayton begins its season at 2-0-0. The Flyers entered the contest ranked No. 4 in the Great Lakes Region and received 12 votes in the weekly NSCAA/adidas poll.
Dayton's Kelly Blumenshein's game-winning goal at the 103:59 mark gave the Flyers the 3-2 victory. After bouncing off a Pitt defender, Blumenshein controlled the ball and fired a shot into the goal's lower right corner. Colleen Gibson was credited with the assist.
Pitt controlled play in the second half, outshooting Dayton 6-4, scoring two goals and forcing the match into overtime. Junior Katie Caslin brought Pitt back with a goal in the 71st minute when she finished a shot after controlling a loose ball in the penalty box. The score was assisted by her twin sister Maura Caslin. The score was Caslin's third career goal. Six minutes later in the 78th minute, freshman Katelyn Ruhe notched the second goal of her career when she finished on a rebound shot. That tied the score at 2-2. The two teams played the final 12 minutes of regulation without a goal, forcing overtime.
Dayton grabbed a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. Jerica DeWolfe scored on an unassisted goal to put Dayton up 1-0. Caitlin Proffitt gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead when she headed in a corner kick from Kathleen Beljan. Dayton outshot Pitt 14-5 in the half.
For the game, Dayton outshot Pitt 20-12. The Flyers also had a 10-5 edge in shots on goal. Liz Carroll and Katie Caslin finished with three shots apiece for Pitt.
Pitt goalkeeper Alison Finch played the game's first 45 minutes and made five saves. Morie Kephart saw action in the game's final 65 minutes and finished with one save.
Five of Pitt's last 10 matches have gone into overtime.
