Aug. 31, 2008

Box Score

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.—Junior Ashley Habbel scored two goals in leading the Pitt women’s soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Iowa State Sunday at the University of Illinois Soccer Tournament. Pitt improved to 1-2-0 on the year while Iowa State drops to 0-2-0.

Habbel, who tied a career-high with her two scores, gave Pitt a 1-0 lead in the game’s third minute when she finished off a shot from six yards out after controlling a ball deflected off an Iowa State defender. Pitt defender Molly Griganavicius gave Pitt a 2-0 halftime lead in the 42nd minute when she registered her first career goal. Griganavicus placed the ball in the back of the net after receiving a through ball via Kelsi Morris and Maura Caslin.

Pitt went up 3-0 lead on Habbel’s second goal in the 59th minute when she finished on a drive from midfield assisted by Kat Weiler. Liz Carroll made it 4-0 Pitt in the 70th minute when she scored on a rebound shot.

Iowa State got on the board in the 80th minute when Elise Reid scored on a shot from the left side. Iowa State outshot Pitt 18-11.

Habbel and Carroll, who totaled two goals and an assist on the weekend, were both named to the all-tournament team.

With her two goals, Habbel notched the 12th and 13th goals of her career. She moved into third place on Pitt’s all-time career scoring list with 13 goals and needs just six more to break the school record held by Cande Ruiz (18 goals from 1998-2001). With her four points on the day, Habbel also moved into a tie for third place on the school’s all-time career points list with 31. Ruiz also owns the record with 47 career points.

Pitt’s Morie Kephart earned the victory in goal after playing all 90 minutes. She finished the day with five saves.

Pitt plays its first home game Friday evening against Pennsylvania. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Founders Field.
